What is the Essence of Leadership?

By the time you are reading this, our country will have elected a new president. No matter who is elected, one thing is clear: he will face some of the biggest challenges in our history. This seems like a good time to remember something renowned economist John Kenneth Galbraith once said: "All of the great leaders have had one characteristic in common: it was the willingness to confront, unequivocally, the major anxiety of their people in their time. This, and not much else, is the essence of leadership.” In this tumultuous age, how will you effectively confront your people’s anxiety (surely there’s plenty to go around)? You’re likely to find some answers—or at least some ideas to reflect on—in this month’s articles, which include Leaders Energize and Inspire by Jim Clemmer; Nancy Emeral Haygeman’s What if Chicken Little is Mistaken?; Totally Different Questions by Ken Lizotte; and A Heartwarming Story by Colleen Kettenhofen.

On a different note, the staff of Inspire! Imagine! Innovate!TM would like to wish you and your family a joyous and compassionate Thanksgiving.

Leaders Energize and Inspire

by Jim Clemmer
Helen was running out of ideas. She tried just about everything to get her two kids to help around the house. Her oldest, Tanya, was 14 going on 21. At age 11, Justin seemed to be a noise covered in dirt. When they were younger, Helen could get them to do jobs around the house by enforcing strict rules or using threats and punishments. As the kids grew immune to that approach, Helen put down the stick and started to dangle rewarding carrots in front of them.

What if Chicken Little is Mistaken?

by Nancy Emeral Haygeman
As I went through my day yesterday I started counting the number of times I heard or saw something that referred to “Wall Street and our failing economy." I stopped at 27 but kept making mental notes of the tone of the conversations and written material–words like “dark uncertainty, dangerous, the bottom, tanking, opportunity for terrorists.” Everything I heard and saw was steeped in fear and great anxiety.

Totally Different Questions

by Ken Lizotte
In a high-speed, global marketplace that reverberates daily with quick-shifting customer expectations and demands from the marketplace to immediately respond, companies may no longer rest on their laurels or keep doing things the way they’ve traditionally been done. The smartest, most successful companies, for example, take pains to pursue not only present customer desires but anticipated, as-yet unexpressed, customer needs and desires in the future. Such projections require both research and imagination.
